Saturday Nights at Washington Avenue
A message from senior pastor, Jim Shelburne:
It is with great enthusiasm that we announce something new and exciting coming to WACC: a Saturday Night Worship Service!
You may ask “why?” And you may think you know. Certainly space is becoming an issue, as it is in any healthy, growing church. But that is not the primary impetus behind the addition of this service. For much of the past three years we have wondered and dialogued and prayed about what might be the “next step” here at WACC. After long consideration, and some hesitance, it became very clear to us that the addition of a Saturday night service would be the simplest way to enhance our ministry and teaching, and to expand our outreach in the community. We really don’t want this to just be about “shuffling” people from Sunday morning to Saturday night, and certainly not about something as trivial as providing you more “butt space” on Sunday mornings!
As a church we do desire to grow in size and in health. But we desire at the same time to create more ways to grow God’s kingdom instead of just expanding our roster. We always need to be finding ways to reach un-churched people, as well as better connecting with some of the folks we already know. This approach has the benefit of allowing us to effectively increase our opportunities while not re-arranging the Sunday morning schedule, which works great just as it is!
The Saturday night service will include all of the same elements you’d expect in any worship service here; it will be contemporary in flavor, and varied in flow. It will be designed to be very casual, welcoming and intimate; with thought given to attracting those who maybe wouldn’t set foot in here on a Sunday morning. It is open to all ages, and we especially hope you might consider inviting your un-churched friends to give it a try. Saturday night worship will launch on February 25, at 5:00 PM in the West Building, which we have reconfigured somewhat to provide an ideal venue for this adult worship experience. A full-hour program of nursery, pre-school, and children’s church programs will be available. Please join us in prayer for this new endeavor, that it will be something God uses to reach more and more people with his good news, as we allow more and more people to experience the blessing of community that is WACC.
And if this is something that sounds exciting to you, we’ll be needing some rotational volunteers in every area from guest services to children’s ministry, to “sweat equity” folks who’ll help with setup and teardown. If you’d like to help, please contact me or James Sharp.
